Meeting with Dr. Hui Zhang from Chengdu University of TCM

In the summer of 2014, I had the honor and pleasure of drinking tea with Dr. Hui Zhang from Chengdu University of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), who was in Denmark at that time to give lectures at the Acupuncture Academy.

Dr. Hui Zhang visited me at Simply Teas’ warehouse, and to my great delight, he is a passionate tea enthusiast, just like me. It didn’t take long before the focus was on tea. Before I could introduce myself, he had given me a small metal box containing 50 grams of Dian Hong tea, which is a black tea from Yunnan. The Chinese still consider tea to be the finest gift one can give, and I was absolutely thrilled to receive it. Yunnan is one of my favorite tea regions in the world, and as I write this blog, I am enjoying the 6th and 7th infusions of these wonderful leaves. The taste and aroma are very reminiscent of our Golden Peacock from Jing Mai in Yunnan.

Tea Tasting Courses

After a brief tour of the warehouse, Dr. Hui Zhang noticed Simply Teas’ selection of puerh cakes. Like me, his preferred tea is puerh. I found a small bag of purple buds shu puerh that I bought in Yunnan last summer. Dr. Hui Zhang had the honor of preparing the tea for me in Gong Fu style. Hours flew by, and after more than 10 infusions of these wonderful leaves, the taste and aroma were still prominent. The tea was the centerpiece, and everything from the flavor, tea friends, and the fantastic health benefits was discussed. But we had to move on, so after a few hours, we said our goodbyes with a clear agreement to keep in touch.

Tea is a very important element in TCM, and we will definitely hear more from Dr. Hui Zhang in the future. In collaboration with the Acupuncture Academy, he will describe how tea affects our mind and well-being. It was truly an inspiring meeting that awakened all the senses and left the body with energy and well-being.
